Te Wiki o te Reo Māori

Role Lead Designer

Each year, Trade Me marks Te Wiki o te Reo Māori with a dedicated creative campaign.

The work celebrates the language and its cultural significance, creating moments that encourage reflection, connection, and everyday use of te reo across the brand.

Challenge & Approach

The creative approach needed to reflect te ao Māori values, uphold Tiriti principles, and engage appropriately with Māori stakeholders throughout the process.

I worked closely with cultural advisors at Riki Consultancy from early concept through to final delivery, ensuring the design thinking, development, and outcomes were culturally appropriate, authentic, and respectful.

Result

By thoughtfully extending the Trade Me illustration style, we opened new creative territory while staying grounded in the kaupapa.

Early collaboration sessions helped establish a strong foundation and encouraged a more exploratory creative direction. Staying closely connected to cultural guidance throughout allowed us to balance vibrancy with respect.

The final work celebrated te reo Māori in a way that felt considered, connected, and genuinely proud.
